Virtues of Jumuah

Why is Friday so important for Muslims? What makes it superior to other days?

Friday is the holy day of Muslims

It is narrated by Abu Huraira and Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: It was Friday from which Allah diverted those who were before us. For the Jews (the day set aside for prayer) was Sabt (Saturday), and for the Christians it was Sunday. And Allah turned towards us and guided us to Friday (as the day of prayer) for us. In fact, He (Allah) made Friday, Saturday and Sunday (as days of prayer). In this order would they (Jews and Christians) come after us on the Day of Resurrection. We are the last of (the Ummahs) among the people in this world and the first among the created to be judged on the Day of Resurrection. In one narration it is to be judged among them". (Muslim, Book 4,Hadith 1862)

Friday is the master of days

“In the sight of Allah (swt) Friday is the master of days. It is more valuable than the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr (Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid –ul-Adha) (Bukhari)

Friday is the most valuable of days

“Friday is the most valuable of days. Friday is more valuable than eid days and the ashura day. Friday is the eid of Mumins in the world and in jannah (heaven).” (Riyadun Nasihin)

The best of days is Friday

It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “The best of your days is Friday. On that day Adam (peace be upon him) was created; on that day he died; on that day the Trumpet will be blown and on that day all of creation will swoon. So send a great deal of blessings upon me, for your blessings will be shown to me.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how will our blessings upon you be shown to you when you have turned to dust?” He said, “Allah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets, peace be upon them.” (Abu Dawood, Nasai)

It was narrated that Abu Lubaabah ibn ‘Abd al-Mundhir said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Friday is the master of days, and the greatest of them before Allah. It is greater before Allah than the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr. It has five characteristics: on this day Allah created Adam, on it He sent Adam down to the earth, on it Allah caused Adam to die, on it there is a time when a person does not ask Allah for anything but He gives it to him, so long as he does not ask for anything haram, and on it the Hour will begin. There is no angel who is close to Allah, no heaven, no earth, no wind, no mountain and no sea that does not fear Friday.” (Ibn Maajah)

When it is a Friday, angels stand at the gate of the mosque and write the names of people in the order of their arrival

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba." (Bukhari, Book 2, Volume 13, Hadith 51)

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib:

Ali said on the pulpit in the mosque of Kufah: When Friday comes, the devils go to the markets with their flags, and involve people in their needs and prevent them from the Friday prayer. The angels come early in the morning, sit at the door of the mosque, and record that so-and-so came at the first hour, and so-and-so came at the second hour until the imam comes out (for preaching). (Abu Dawud, Book 3, Hadith 1046)

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "On every Friday the angels take their stand at every gate of the mosques to write the names of the people chronologically (i.e. according to the time of their arrival for the Friday prayer and when the Imam sits (on the pulpit) they fold up their scrolls and get ready to listen to the sermon." (Bukhari, Book 4, Volume 54, Hadith 433)

The Hell-fire is kindled except on Friday

Narrated Abu Qatadah:

The Prophet (pbuh) disapproved of the offering of prayer at the meridian except on Friday. The Hell-fire is kindled except on Friday. (Abu Dawud, Book 3, Hadith 1078)

There is a time on Friday at which no Muslim would ask Allah for what is good but He would give it to him

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) talked about Friday and said, "There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand." And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands. (Bukhari, Book 2, Volume 13, Hadith 57)

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah:

The Prophet (pbuh) said: Friday is divided into twelve hours. Amongst them there is an hour in which a Muslim does not ask Allah for anything but He gives it to him. So seek it in the last hour after the afternoon prayer. (Abu Dawud, Book 3, Hadith 1043)

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There is a time on Friday at which no Muslim servant would pray and would ask Allah for a thing (that is good) but He would give it to him. Qutaiba pointed with the help of his hand that it (the time) is short. (Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 1849)
