Can a menstruating woman cut her nails or hair?
Is it permissible to cut nails or hair during menstruation?
Cutting nails or hair during menses is not mentioned among the haram actions (prohibitions) in fiqh books; however, in Hanafi school of thought it is mentioned to be “makruh tanzihan” (somewhat disliked) to cut one's hair or nails while in a state of major ritual impurity. (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, Hashiyat al-Tahtawi `ala Maraqi al-Falah, al-Hadiyya al-`Ala'iyya)
So, a Hanafi woman may prefer to delay cutting her nails till her menses finishes. But it is also stated that, not cutting nails, pubic and armpit hairs past 40 days is “makruh tahrimi” (prohibitively disliked). So, if nails or hairs are excessively long, it would be permitted for a menstruating woman to remove them.
